About MCAN

MCAN is the acronym for the Muslim Corpers' Association of Nigeria, a national body that has fostered a strong network of Muslim youth corps members across Nigeria for over three decades. It was established during the 1978/1979 service year and is officially registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) since 1994.

The association was born out of the need for Muslim corps members—deployed through the NYSC scheme (established by Decree No. 24 of 1973)—to have a unified platform for spiritual growth, Islamic coordination, and community service during their service year outside their state of origin. MCAN's national headquarters is located in Mabushi, Abuja, with branches in all 36 states and the FCT.

Aims and Objectives of MCAN

  1. To serve as a coordinating body and forum for the exchange of ideas among Muslim corps members nationwide.
  2. To protect the legitimate rights and interests of Muslim corps members across Nigeria.
  3. To promote the correct understanding of Islam among corps members, students, and the broader public.
  4. To coordinate efforts with Islamic organizations in propagating Islam across Nigeria and beyond.

Programmes of MCAN

MCAN's activities are structured to align with the NYSC calendar, allowing members to fully engage in national service while contributing to Islamic growth and societal development.

1. Pre-Orientation Programmes

  • Organized in collaboration with the MSSN in higher institutions nationwide.
  • Includes seminars and the distribution of pamphlets to sensitize prospective corps members.
  • Begins about 2–3 months before NYSC orientation camp opens.

2. Orientation Camp Programmes

  • MCAN lectures and Da'wah sessions for corps members.
  • Islamic posters, welcome banners, and mosque activity boards.
  • Structured mosque-based teaching on Aqeedah, Ibaadah, and Mu'amalat.
  • Qur'an memorization exercises.
  • Humanitarian camp projects (e.g., drainage or bridge repairs).
  • Islamic video shows and interfaith outreach efforts.

3. Post-Orientation Programmes

Educational/Da'wah Programmes:

  • Weekly Al-Usrah gatherings.
  • Arabic and Qur'anic classes.
  • Village Da'wah weekends.
  • TV/radio programs in over 16 states.
  • Monthly bulletins and leadership seminars (e.g., on Nikkah).
  • Islamic reverts' classes.
  • Free tutorials in secondary schools in over 12 states.

Visitation Programmes:

  • Regular Jum'ah services and lectures in prisons.
  • Bi-annual visits to motherless babies' homes.
  • Other targeted visitations based on community needs.

Community Development Projects:

  • Mosque and Arabic school construction and renovation.
  • Islamic book centres and video clubs in 20+ states.
  • Largest Islamic book centre located at National Headquarters Mosque, Abuja.
